PREMIA Best Student Paper Award 2016




Gold prize (SGD 1000): LU Jing (SMU), “Large Scale Online Kernel Learning” published in Journal of Machine Learning Research  (2016).


Silver prize (SGD 500): LIU Jun (NTU), “Spatio-Temporal LSTM with Trust Gates for 3D Human Action Recognition” published in ECCV 2016.


Honourable Mention Award: David LEE (NUS), “Distinguishing Posed and Spontaneous Smiles by Facial Dynamics” published in ACCV 2016 Workshop on Spontaneous Facial Behavior Analysis.


Honourable Mention Award: Jason KUEN (NTU), “Recurrent Attentional Networks for Saliency Detection” published in CVPR 2016.




PREMIA Call for submission


The PREMIA Best Student Paper Award 2016 is closed for submission. 

This is eligible for papers published between 1 Jan 2016 to 31 Dec 2016 (both days are inclusive).


Submission deadline: 15 Jan 2017.


The Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence Association (PREMIA), invites students to participate in the PREMIA Best Student Paper Awards for papers published in the current calendar year. There are three categories of awards:

Gold Award: each paper wins a cash prize of S$1000.00,

Silver Award: each paper wins a cash prize of S$500.00, and

Honourable Mention Award: each winner will receive an award certificate without cash prize.

The closing date for all entries is listed in this website or specified by PREMIA. Later submissions will not be attended. Shortlisted candidates will be notified.



  1. The main author of the paper must be a current PREMIA member (either a Full Member or Student Member). If his/her membership has expired, he/she must renew his/her membership to be eligible for this award. If he/she is not yet a PREMIA member, he/she must apply for PREMIA membership, by the submission deadline above, in order to be eligible for this award.

  2. The main author must be a registered student (full-time or part-time) at one of the tertiary education institutions in Singapore at the time of submitting the paper for publication.

  3. The paper must report only the work done when the author was a student in Singapore.

  4. The paper must be published in the current calendar year, both dates inclusive, in either a journal, a book chapter or at a conference.

  5. The paper must address a topic of relevance to PREMIA. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, pattern recognition and machine intelligence, both theoretical and applied in domains such as computer vision, image processing, speech analysis, robotics, multimedia, document analysis, character recognition, knowledge engineering, fractal analysis and intelligent control, and involving methods such as statistical techniques, neural networks, deep learning, evolutionary programming, fuzzy logic, transfer learning and hardware implementation.


Submission Instructions

  1. Complete the PREMIA Best Student Paper Award entry form (now available for download) and attach the following three documents:

    1. A pdf copy of the paper as published.

    2. A pdf copy of the acceptance letter and all reviewers’ comments received prior to publication.

    3. A supporting statement from your academic supervisor in a pdf file.

  2. Submission will be via email. Please email a single ZIP file containing all the above documents to PREMIA. The ZIP file size should be 5 MB or less.

  3. Only one submission per candidate is allowed. For a paper co-authored by several students, only one submission will be considered. There is no submission fee.

  4. Shortlisted candidates will be required to give oral presentations of their papers during the PREMIA Members' Night in the year.

  5. A part of the judging criteria will be based on audience voting by PREMIA members (Full Members and Student Members) present in this year’s PREMIA Members' Night.

  6. Award winners may be invited to speak in a workshop or at the Annual General Meeting organized by PREMIA this year.

  7. The results will be announced at the PREMIA Member's Night. All candidates, whether shortlisted or not, are encouraged to attend the PREMIA Member’s Night for the awards ceremony.
